Can You Heal Me Now?
It was the Fall of 1986 and I was a college senior. But I spent that Thanksgiving weekend in the 'nuclear medicine' wing of Long Island Jewish Hospital getting my thryoid tested and then biopsed. In JAN of 1987, I self-admitted myself for a right lobe thyroidectomy. The doctors removed a 2.7cm 'neoplasm' from my neck. A week later, frozen sections revealed a few cells (I think was 2) were pathognomonic for follicular cancer. I was just 22 years on DEC 28th. I was a few months from graduation. And now I was being tagged as 'at risk' for follicular cancer. It was a slow moving one that doesn't even get serious until your 50's, and it's more common in women, not 22 year old dudes. Here's the wiki page FYI (1) ...
I'll get into where my cancer story went from there on this week's show. For now, here's a 2008 vision of cancer that isn't so pathologizing. It's become almost like a stint in rehab these days to have a 'bout of cancer' now. If you read between the lines here, it's more a game of supporting immune function that 'preventing disease'. That's a total 180.
Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins
1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.
2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.
3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.
4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.
5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.
